AREA REGIONAL SOFTBALL ACTION: Lady Dees shut out Van Buren

ALBIA — Liz Anderson had a triple and two RBI and Kylee Coughlin scattered six hits over six shutout innings as the Albia softball team opened Class 2A regional play with a 10-0 win over Van Buren on Thursday.
With the win, the Lady Dees (28-4) move on to host Central Lee on Saturday. Central Lee knocked off West Burlington 3-1 on Thursday night.
“We did what we had to do tonight,” said Albia coach Mitch Chance. “We executed in all six innings and that’s important in the first game at regionals. We’ve been putting the ball in play a lot and giving ourselves a chance to win.”
Albia posted four runs in the second inning and six in the sixth to put the game out of reach as the Lady Dees blasted out 15 hits while Coughlin allowed just two and didn’t walk a batter. Coughlin fanned six Van Buren batters and helped herself out with three hits at the plate in the contest, while Sheila Sanders and Brittany Moore each had a double.
The Lady Dees shared the wealth at the plate, as Coughlin, Emmy Whistler, Sanders, Moore, Alicia Bettis and Katie Curran each had one RBI for Albia.

Panthers roll past Sigourney
PEKIN — Shelby Blakely, Kira Swanson and Ashley Morales each batted in two runs, and it was more than enough support for pitcher Mycaela Crouse as the Pekin softball team opened up Class 2A regional play with a 12-2 bouncing of Sigourney in action on Thursday.
Crouse earned her 28th win on the mound this season as Pekin improved to 30-7 overall. The Panthers will travel to Pella Christian for regional play Saturday. Pella Christian defeated Eddyville-Blakesburg Thursday to advance. Pekin lost to Pella Christian in regionals last season.
“They came down last year and beat us on our diamond,” said Pekin coach Bryan Marlay. “We’ve got a second chance now, a chance to take them down on their diamond. They’re a good team, and they’re very well-coached.”
Crouse fanned five Sigourney batters over six innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and four walks. She also had two base hits at the plate, as did Brenda Fritchen, Lexi Holmes, and Paige Atwood, who also had a double for Pekin. Holmes, Kayla Northup, Fritchen, Jessica Deutsch and Dominic Toole all had an RBI for the Panthers.
“We did a nice job of taking aggressive cuts at the plate,” said Marlay. “The girls played had and did a good job hitting the ball.”

Pella Christian downs Rockets
PELLA — The Eddyville-Blakesburg softball team ended the season on Thursday with a 16-4 loss to Pella Christian in Class 2A Regional play.
The Rockets finish with a 6-24 record. Kaitlyn Reed was a bright spot at the plate for E-B Thursday, blasting a pair of doubles an getting an RBI. Sara Lane, who was tagged with the loss on the mound, also had an RBI for the Rockets.
Pella Christian will host Pekin in regional play Saturday.
