Warriors to take on Solon for state berth

WEST BURLINGTON — The Van Buren Warrior baseball squad silenced Mediapolis by a score of 3-0 in the Class 2A, District 12 Final on Saturday in West Burlington.

Michael Boyd pitched a complete-game shutout for the victorious Warriors, who avenged a 10-0 drubbing at the hands of Mediapolis in the regular season.

Van Buren (19-6) takes on eighth-ranked Solon (31-9) for the right to state in the Class 2A, Substate Final on Tuesday evening in Wellman.

Each team will vie for its first ever state summer baseball tournament appearance. Solon slipped past Mid-Prairie Wellman 7-6 in its district final game.

Van Buren scored two runs in the opening frame. Joey Heckenberg’s solo home run accounted for the final Warrior run.

Boyd is now 6-2 on the season and went 2-3 at the plate. Brett Scott and Spencer Bartholomew registered Van Buren’s other RBI.
