M-U advances to substate

AFTON — The Moulton-Udell baseball squad will play for its second ever state summer baseball tournament appearance on Tuesday night in Liberty Center.

The problem is, the Eagles and head coach Brent Martsching don’t know their opponent yet.

M-U defeated Bluegrass rival Mormon Trail 12-8 in each team’s Class 1A, District 11 Final on Saturday night in Afton.

Martsching and his squad will await the winner of Martensdale St. Mary’s versus Grandview Park Baptist, which takes place tonight at 7 p.m. Each team was rained out in its Class 1A, District 12 matchup on Saturday.

M-U plays Tuesday night in Liberty Center in the Class 1A, Substate 6 game at 7 p.m.

If the Eagles, now 12-8 on the year, are able to come out on top in that game, they’ll play at state for the first time since 1995.

“We continue to swing the bats well and are playing solid defense behind our pitchers,” said Martsching.

M-U starter Zeb Guinn pitched five innings on Saturday and will be ready to go come Tuesday in the biggest game of the season for the Eagles.

Guinn allowed six hits and struck out three batters.

M-U scored a run in each of the first five innings, highlighted by four runs plated in the fourth. The Eagles led 12-4 before Mormon Trail scored four runs in the final frame.

Dakota Hill rapped our three hits and knocked in three runs. Ethan Brinegar singled twice and doubled. He collected two RBI and scored three times. Zach Schoonover also had three hits and produced two RBI.

The Eagles defeated Mormon Trail 17-9 in the regular season.
