Big Reds get past Mustangs in double overtime

By ROGER THOMAS, Courier correspondent

BLOOMFIELD — First games of the season are pretty typical. Offenses sometimes sputter, a few too many balls are dropped and often the penalties pile up.

All of the above happened in Bloomfield Friday night, but the fans were treated to a season opener that was anything but typical. The Centerville 34-28 double overtime win over Davis County sent players and fans alike home drained.

Opening with a huge rivalry game isn’t ideal, but the state sets the schedule. So both teams — led by some very good individual performances — stepped up and left it all on the field. The Big Reds’ Tanner Susin had 121 first half yards rushing, Ethan Davis’ had 14 tackles and Davis County’s Coleton Matthews’ had 309 total yards of offense to lead the way.

The first quarter was scoreless, but Centerville scored on the first play of the second quarter for a 7-0 lead that stood up as the halftime score. Susin scored on a four-yard run for the Big Reds’ score.

Centerville would go up 14-0 on their first touch of the second half. Susin scored his second touchdown just thirty-four seconds into the third on a seven-yard run.

The Mustangs gave up 164 yards rushing in the first half but would only give the Big Reds 68 second-half rushing yards.

“We made a couple of defensive adjustments but really it was just our guys playing with a lot more confidence that made the difference,” said Mustang head coach Dave Lukens.

The Mustangs got on the board in the third on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Matthews to Devin Williams.

DC tied the game at the 3:26 mark of the fourth on a one-yard touchdown run by Austin Utt. The PAT pass from Matthews to Williams tied the score at 14.

Then the action really heated up. Centerville scored on a 44-yard pass from Tyler Gray to Thaler Carter with 1:45 to play.

Centerville’s quarterback talked about the big play.

“I know we can pass the ball better, but I just make plays whenever I can.”

A bad snap stopped the extra point try, but with not much time remaining the Big Reds seemed to be in control.

With just over a minute to play the Mustangs started the final drive of regulation from their own 29. The drive would include two long pass completions by Matthews. The first was a 14-yarder to Williams that took the ball to the Centerville 15 with 13 seconds remaining. After a DC penalty, Matthews hit tight end Aaron Halls with a 26-yarder down to the three with just 5 ticks left. After spiking the ball, Utt scored again from the three with two seconds left. The game was there for the taking. but the PAT kick was blocked and the game went to the first overtime tied at 20.

DC had the ball first and used a Big Red penalty and a four-yard run by Utt to move the ball to the one. Matthews scored from there and he’d add the PAT run to give the Mustangs a 28-20 lead.
