ELDON — For the second time in the last five nights, the fans in and around the communities of Sigourney and Bloomfield were rooting on opposite sides of an athletic contest.
This time the fans from Bloomfield had the more enjoyable ride home. Davis County picked up a district quarterfinal volleyball win by downing Sigourney 3-0 Tuesday night in Eldon. The win moves their record to 11-15. Davis County will travel to Mt. Pleasant Friday night for a match against No. 6 Mediapolis.
Game one went to the Mustangs 25-22. A block winner by Aisha Boone put the Mustangs up 1-0. The Mustangs led for most of game one. Krista Gibson had three early kills to keep the Mustangs up 7-5. Sigourney tied it at seven before Davis County would stretch the lead to 13-7 behind the serving of Leah Rushman. Her five-straight points helped build the seemingly comfortable lead.
Rushman would be perfect serving on the night (21/21). Many of the sophomore’s serves were hard and deep. She talked about her match
“This is my best night serving. I’ve been working on being a strong server. Tonight I was really comfortable.”
Even though the Savages lost game one, they played some of their best ball to take a 20-16 lead. The big factor was the serving of Carolyn Holm. She had seven-straight service points, including two aces in the run.
Serving would be responsible for another big swing in game one. Gibson took the Mustangs from down by four to up three at 23-20.
A kill by Sigourney’s Whitney Abrahamson closed the lead to 23-22 Mustangs, but Davis County closed it out with two straight.
The game-one win started the complete reversal of the previous match between these two teams. Sigourney had defeated the Mustangs 3-0 earlier in the season.
Game two was close early before the Mustangs took control at the midpoint and then finished out the 25-18 win.
A Rushman serve put Davis County up 7-6 and after a winner by Boone, the Mustangs led 14-8. Lauren Dewes built the Mustang lead to 19-8 as she finished off a seven-point service run. Holm had a kill and a block to help Sigourney close to 22-18. It would be her only block of the match.
“Even though Atwood (Stephani) didn’t play, we worked at taking their middle blocking out of play. We worked on roll shots more in practice,” said Mustang coach Marla Wilfawn.
The Savages found themselves in unfamiliar territory as they began game three and a possible comeback.
Sigourney coach Chris Carter commented.
“The last two weeks we haven’t lost a game and until tonight we had never been down 2-0. We almost got back in it but give credit to Davis County. They played really good defense and that really bothered our aggressiveness.”
