AREA SUBSTATE FOOTBALL ACTION: Centerville dominates Washington
CENTERVILLE — The fourth-ranked Centerville Big Reds will make their third ever state playoff appearance after dominating Washington 40-8 in Class 3A substate football action Wednesday night.
The Big Reds (10-0) started the season 9-0 for the first time since 1931.
Centerville has advanced to playoff football just three times in school history — back in 1984 and most recently last year. The Big Reds haven’t been able to advance past the first round.
The Big Reds were able to run the ball to perfection against Washington.
Centerville is led by one of the top running backs in the state. That’s Tanner Susin and he rushed for 150 yards and three touchdowns.
Centerville was able to get off to a 20-0 lead by halftime.
Ethan Moorman added 147 yards on just eight carries. As a team, the Big Reds rushed for 310 yards, passed for another 69 and a touchdown, ending the game with 379 total yards of offense.
Defensively the Big Reds stepped to the plate. Led by Moorman’s 12 tackles and one sack and Jordan McCoy’s two interceptions, Centerville gave up zero points until the fourth quarter.
Washington was able to get on the board in the fourth, scoring a touchdown and converting a two-point conversion. The score was irrelevant, as the game was all but over by that point.
Centerville will look to rewrite the record books again Monday against Clear Creek-Amana at Centerville.
