OTTUMWA — A total of nine Indian Hills Community College soccer players, five men and four women, were named to the All-Region XI teams announced by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference.
IHCC men’s players named to the all-league team were first-team selection Ryan Culbertson, a sophomore from Fort Madison; second-team choice Cheyne Reiter, a freshman from LaPorte City; and freshmen Gustavo Scorzelli, Damian Sheerin and Ben Smiley, all honorable mention picks.
Reiter led the Warriors in goals this season with seven. Sheerin, from West Point, had four goals; Scorzelli, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, led in assists with four; and Smiley, from Norwalk, was the number one goalkeeper for IHCC this fall.
The women’s all-conference soccer players from Indian Hills included first-team selection Brooke Duea, a sophomore from Earlham, who led IHCC in goals with 11 and added four assists; Caroline Gagliardi, a sophomore from Sao Paulo, Brazil, who tallied five goals and a team-high six assists, and was chosen for the second team; and two freshmen from Centerville, Crystal Maldonado and Jordan Davis, who were both named to the honorable mention list. Maldonado was second on the squad with six goals.
IHCC first-year head coach Kirk Artist complimented both the men’s and women’s teams for the effort they played with this season.
“All of our players understood that they are the ones who are establishing a proud tradition of soccer here at Indian Hills,” Artist said.
“The last three months was just the start of that effort. We have a good mix. There are individuals from all over the world on the teams, players from around the state of Iowa, and several from Ottumwa High School. And I believe if they continue to develop throughout the offseason, we will be able to take another step forward next season. I am proud of them for representing Indian Hills with such class.”
