CP2: Centerville vs. Pella
Dome on the line for Big Red
By KELLY TERPSTRA, Courier sports writer
OTTUMWA — Pella vs. Centerville — the rematch.
Winner goes to Cedar Falls to play on the green carpet of the UNI-Dome.
Sioux City Heelan versus Harlan – eat your heart out.
The Class 3A Iowa High School football quarterfinals has come down to this — eight teams, four great games and plenty of familiarity.
When the lights shine down on the gridiron in Marion County tonight — there will only be one winner — Centerville or Pella.
It only makes sense.
One of the marquee matchups across the state will pit the Dutch versus the Big Red on Pella’s home field to advance to the semifinal round in Cedar Falls.
Call it CP2.
If the second game goes down anything like the first, watch out and hold your breath because it could be another white-knuckler.
When head coach Jim Knott’s undefeated Big Red machine (11-0) takes on perennial-power Pella (7-3), it will finish a chapter in a “book” that is a must-read.
The first meeting between the two was an instant overtime classic — Centerville 44, Pella 43.
Three-fourth’s of Class 3A’s quarterfinal round games are rematches. Top-ranked Harlan versus sixth-ranked Heelan headlines and New Hampton (9-2) at Decorah (9-2) is also a second installment.
Top-ranked Harlan (11-0) beat Heelan (10-1) 24-6 in the regular season. New Hampton did the same to Decorah 26-14.
Undefeated squads Clear Lake (11-0) or Carroll (11-0) will play the Harlan-Heelan winner.
If fourth-ranked Centerville is to get past Pella – a dome-dweller in 2008 that lost to Decorah 37-20 in the semis — it must get production from its beast of a back – Tanner Susin.
