Tri-County meets familiar foe

OTTUMWA — They’ve gotten to know each other pretty well over the last few years.

When Tri-County (11-0) travels to Lenox (11-0) tonight for the quarterfinal round of the Eight-Player State Football Playoffs, it will be a matchup of two teams that have become quite familiar with each other.

The teams have met in the state playoffs each of the last four years, with Lenox coming out on top the last two times.

Both teams are able to put points up on the scoreboard.

Tri-County put on an offensive show in a win Monday in the opening round of the state playoffs, as 107 points were scored during a 64-43 victory over Ankeny Christian Academy. The teams went up and down the field with relative ease as they combined for 868 yards of offense.

Senior Colt Brumbaugh had 274 yards rushing for the Trojans and found the end zone four times. Senior Andy Thomas rushed for two touchdowns and passed for two more.

Brumbaugh has gained over 1500 yards and 26 touchdowns on the season. Brumbaugh also has a punt return and two kickoff returns for scores. Thomas has accumulated over 1500 yards passing and 26 touchdown passes. Senior Ike Schmidt has caught 12 of those scores and has over 600 receiving yards on the season.

The Trojan defense didn’t exactly shut down the Eagle offense, but Tri-County slowed them down enough — and the Trojan defense made several big plays, creating turnovers and allowing the offense to get back on the field — and allowing Brumbaugh and Company to chew up yardage and chew up the clock.

“We had a good ground game tonight, and we’ll need to do even better against Lenox,” said Trojan head coach Scott Edmundson.

The Trojans will want to keep Lenox’s prolific offense off the field as much as possible. Lenox defeated Moravia 62-6 in the substate and downed Grandview Park Baptist 40-23 in its first-round state playoff game Monday. The offensive juggernaut scored over 60 points in five games during the regular season, and Lenox has scored over 40 points in every game except one — a 27-24 victory over East Union.

Senior back Eric Hensley leads Lenox. Hensley has rushed for over 1110 yards and 24 touchdowns this season. Junior Austin Christiansen has over 600 yards and 14 scores, while Austin Hancock is a triple-threat to score, with 19 rushing touchdowns and 18 touchdown passes. Hancock has also returned two punts and one kickoff for touchdowns this season.
