OSKALOOSA — One year after advancing to the state volleyball playoffs, the Fairfield Trojans’ season has come to an end.
The Trojans were downed in three straight games by Williamsburg in Class 3A regional final action Tuesday night in Oskaloosa by scores of 25-14, 25-14 and 25-20.
The unranked Raiders (25-10) were rated as high as eighth in Class 3A this season.
If the Trojans would have won the match, they would have advanced to the state volleyball tournament for the second-straight year. The Trojans were beaten out in round one to eventual 3A state champion Marion.
Williamsburg was able to get off to an early lead in game one, but the Trojans climbed back after Tori Ogden served five-straight points to pull the score to 16-13, Williamsburg still in the lead. Unfortunately for the Trojans, Williamsburg was able to outscore FHS 9-1 to end game one.
“We tried to do a lot with our passes we wanted to serve aggressive,” Fairfield head coach Nancy Diers said.
The Trojans were led in the serving department by Ogden, who was 12-12 with two aces. Tyler Emery was also 12-12 with one ace and Meredith Flattery was 8-9 with an ace.
The Raiders were led by Mackenzie Bigbee, a sophomore who ended the night with seven kills and five aces.
“We studied our film and worked a lot on defensive positioning,” said Diers. “We just tried to get our defense prepared.”
In game three, the Trojans came out looking to change the tone of the game. The Trojans were up 8-2 before the Raiders were able to rally behind Bigbee and seal the match 25-20.
“The girls were pretty disappointed after the game, but Williamsburg has a really nice team,” said Diers. “We were just a step slow in a few areas tonight.”
Flattery and Ogden combined for 13 kills for the Trojans and Emry led the team with 10 assists.
The Trojans end their 2009 season with 22 wins and 13 losses, but not before going 8-0 in conference play for the fourth-straight season.
In other state regional volleyball action, unranked Grandview Park Baptist stunned second-ranked Twin Cedars by scores of 26-24, 24-26, 21-25, 25-18, 15-5.
Twin Cedars was a perfect 22-0 going into the contest and Grandview Park Baptist was 23-14.
