Osky pitchers combine to throw no-hitter

OSKALOOSA – Three Oskaloosa Babe Ruth pitchers combined to throw a no-hit shutout Friday in the boys 10-0 victory over Grand Islands, Neb., in the consolation bracket of the Midwest Plains Senior Babe Ruth tournament game at Lacey Memorial Complex.

Jacob Gleason, Jesse Van Dalen and Skyler Purdy each threw two innings in a game that ended after six innings because of the 10-run rule.

“It was a little nerve-racking going in and throwing because it was a big game tonight since we could have been knocked out,” Purdy said. “But we couldn’t let it get in our heads. We just had to go in and throw strikes and do our job.”

And that’s exactly what the pitching trio did. Gleason, who started the game on the hill, was particularly impressive, fanning five of the six batters he faced in his two innings of work.

Osky jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, even though they didn’t record a hit in the inning. The runs were induced by three walks, a hit batter and an error by Grand Island second baseman Gonner Burrows.

The next several innings moseyed along quitely because of a scarcity of offensive fireworks. Osky’s pitchers were dominant on the mound, but the team’s batters failed to find the gaps in the infield or the holes in the outfield.

In the sixth inning, however, Osky’s offense awoke from its slumber and Grand Island couldn’t figure out how stifle the boys momentum. Osky tacked on six runs in an inning ornamented by an RBI double to left centerfield by Nick Rutledge and a 2-RBI single by Coy Moore.

“We pulled through at the end,” Rutledge said.

Osky’s offensive blitz was compounded by a couple of Grand Island errors that helped Osky get a couple of its runs across home plate.
