Mustangs trample competition at Eddy Relays

Eddyville —  The Davis County girls track and field team put on a clinic Tuesday at the Eddy Relays, as it ran, jumped and threw its way to a first place score of 162.50.

The Mustangs dominance was fueled by an abundance of first-place finishes. Kassidy Sharp blazed to a first-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.16 seconds and claimed first-place honors in the high jump with a leap of 4-10. Kate Birchmier turned in another sterling performance, as she finished first in the shot put with a heave of 40 feet and the discus, which she hurled 103-09.

"Our field events had another clean sweep for the fifth meet in a row," Davis County track and field coach Josh Husted said. "This is really awesome to rack up so many points prior to the running portion of our own meet."

The Mustangs star also shined brightly in relay events, as Davis County took home first-place honors in the 4x800 meter relay (10:44.51), the 4x400 meter relay (4:23.11), and the distance medley (4:35.50).

"Our 4x400 and Distance Medley teams look really impressive," Husted said. "Both ran to personal bests and lit the track up."

In addition, Mustang Hayleigh Sharp claimed first-place status in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet. Finishing a distant second was host Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, which finished with 91 points. Tasha Alexander elevated the Rockets' final tally by taking first in the 400-meter hurdles, completing the race in 73 seconds. E-B-F also claimed second place in the 4x200-meter relay (2:02.43), the distance medley (4:35.50) and the 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay (74.95).

Albia finished third at the relays with 37.50 points. The Blue Demon sprint medley team garnered second with 1:58.36 and Hannah DeBruin placed third in the 100-meter dash with 13.29. Chariton finished fifth as a team with 65 points.
