Grinnell beats EBF, North Mahaska

GRINNELL — The Grinnell baseball team beat a pair of area teams to win their own “Tiger” Invitational on Saturday. After scoring the last 12 runs to rally from an early 3-1 deficit to beat North Mahaska 13-3 in six innings, Grinnell edged Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 3-2 in the championship game.

The Rockets were spurred on to the second-place finish Saturday by a four-RBI day at the plate from Christian Bambrook, who had four hits in the tournament including a pair of doubles in the final against Grinnell. Lewie Winkleman tossed a three-hit shutout to put EBF in the final as the Rockets beat Nevada, 4-0, in the semifinals.

North Mahaska bounced back themselves to earn a split in Grinnell, finishing third with an 8-6 win over Nevada. Trent Roose had a pair of extra base hits, drove in two runs and scored twice in the tournament while A.J. Hibler had a hit and two RBI in the Warhawks’ third-place win.

EBF (20-10) returns to the diamond today for a critical South Central Conference doubleheader at No. 8 (3A) Chariton. The Rockets will need to sweep the Chargers to draw even in the SCC race.

North Mahaska also looked to stay in the hunt for a conference crown, hosting Sigourney in South Iowa Cedar League play Monday as the Courier went to press. The Warhawks (19-5, 15-2) also host HLV in SICL action Wednesday.
