Hughes' top score lifts Warriors to dual win

KEOSAUQUA— The Van Buren girls golf team, led by Payten Hughes, defeated Central Lee in dual Tuesday 215-234, while the Warrior boys fell to the Hawks by 11 strokes, 175-186.

Hughes posted a round of 48 — which earned her runner-up status — and helped her team pick up the win.

Hughes finished five strokes behind medalist Alex Krebiel, who carded a 43.

Lydia Heald finished just behind her Warrior teammate with a round of 49. Rounding things out for the Van Buren girls were Meredith Miller, who carded a 58; Bethany Millard, who shot a 60; and Taylor Murgia, who finished with a 68.

For the Warrior boys, Austin Bartholomew tied for second overall with a 43 and Noah Whitten carded a 45. Coming in third among the Van Buren boys was Brandon Plecker, who finished with a 48. Finishing things out for the Warriors were Braxton Bainbridge with a 50, Mitch Garrels 54 and Colton Gates 59.
