Last-inning loss snaps Legion's long winning streak

PERRY – Three innings away from carrying a 12-game winning streak into state tournament play, the Ottumwa American Legion team instead will look to bounce back this weekend after losing a late lead in their last regular season contest. Carroll scored the final four runs in game two of a doubleheader with the Wapello County squad, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to score a 4-3 victory that snapped Ottumwa's 11-game winning streak.

Kyle Keck led Ottumwa to their 11th-straight win in the opener, combining with Bryce Ward on a one-hit shutout while going 3-4 at the plate in a 7-0 game-one win. Keck drove in two runs in the wins while striking out seven batters over three innings.

Alex Goodvin struck out eight batters and allowed just two hits over four innings to start game two. Ottumwa scored twice in the fifth to open a three-run lead, but seven walks and a pair of errors helped in leading Carroll back with two runs in the fifth, the tying run in the sixth and the game winner in the bottom of the seventh.

"We've got to limit our mistakes if we plan to go to the Legion tournament," Ottumwa American Legion head coach John Hart said. "If you're going to lose one, that's one to get out of the way."

The Ottumwa American Legion (11-5) opens play in the Legion state baseball tournament Saturday morning at 10 a.m. against Fort Dodge at Saydel High School. Teams will participate in pool-play games throughout the opening day with the top four teams in the four different pools moving on to elimination-round matchups on Sunday.
