---- — CEDAR RAPIDS — The Ottumwa duo of Hayli Beeson and Kelsey Granneman came one match away from qualifying for state at the Class 2A girls tennis regionals Wednesday.
The Bulldog duo scored two victories before they suffered a loss in the semifinals. After they suffered a 6-3 loss in their first match, the Bulldog pair bounced back to blank their opponents in the next two sets, 6-0, 6-0. Granneman and Beeson went on to win their next match in two sets 6-3, 6-4. Unfortunately, Beeson and Granneman fell to Rina Moore and Lilly Hartman of Cedar Rapids Washington 6-0, 6-2 in the third round.
"They were really aggressive," Ottumwa girls tennis coach Emily Phommachack said, "I thought both of them did exceptionally well at the net. Kelsey had very consistent ground strokes for the most part. Hayli had great lobs today."
Jennifer Klodt got a first round bye, but she suffered a 6-0, 6-0 second round loss in a match where, Phommachack said, the final score didn't accurately convey the way the match went down.
"She moved her opponent around," Phommachack said. "I just kept telling her 'that score doesn't tell what you did on the court today because you did really well."'
Jill Ardueser also played well, though she was unable to muster enough offense to score a victory. Ardueser fell to Jennifer Greif of Cedar Rapids Washington 7-5, 6-1.
"She did a nice job of letting her opponent make a mistake and her serves were on target today," Phommacack said.
Beth Overturf and Katie Zingg had a strong second set, but they still came up a little short, falling to Caroline Berg and Kitty McGurk of Cedar Rapids Washington 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
"I thought that our girls played the best that they could today," Phommachack said. "They left everything out on the court."
Fairfield's Karley Williams and Centerville's Makenzie Richmond both qualified for state at the Class 1A Regionals.
The Bulldogs finish their season at Des Moines Roosevelt Friday. If the girls win the dual, they will clinch the CIML Metro Conference title.
