DES MOINES — Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont's esteemed wrestling program had not one, not two, but four wrestlers advance to the Class 1 state semifinals Friday.
In his second commanding victory of the tourney, EBF's Tyler Foubert stuck Central Elkader's Marcus Siegwarth in less than 40 seconds in the quarterfinals at 160 pounds. Rocket Jerren Glosser also was a paragon of domination in his match against Zach Keppy of Wilton at 138 pounds. Glosser used mixture of near-falls and takedowns to overwhelm Keppy in a 13-1 major decision victory.
EBF's Blake Marolf staved off a spirited challenge from Luke Kingensmith of Woodbury Central 3-2 at 145. The match was locked in a 2-2 tie going into the third period, but Marolf managed to corral another point in the third period and escape with the hard-fought victory. In addition, at 152 pounds, Rocket Tucker Black secured a 10-4 victory over Gabe Verschoor of Woodbury Central. Marolf is looking to return to the state finals.
Meanwhile, EBF's Dillon Pigsley suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Logan Moore West Monona in overtime. To further compound Pigsley's frustrations, the end of the match was mired in controversy, as it looked like Pigsley might had gotten a reversal before time ran out.
For Cardinal's Ryan Cale, Zach Fowler, his opponent, proved to be too thorny a riddle to crack, as Fowler picked up a decisive 6-0 win at 113 pounds in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, on the mat right beside Cale, Moravia's Briar Cochran and Jared Hensley grappled in an evenly balanced match that came down to the final seconds. But, alas, in the end, Hensley bested the Mohawk wrestler 6-5 at 113.
The Class 1A semifinal results weren't available at press time.
