ELDON — The 2013-14 archery season has opened for the Cardinal "Shooting Comets."
The first tournament of the season was held over the weekend at Eddyville-Blakesburg Fremont High School on Saturday. Over 230 individuals participated in four divisions.
The Cardinal Archery team came home with three first-place trophies in all three team events. The first division, the Elementary Division, saw the Cardinal Elementary squad bring home a first-place trophy with a team score of 2,180.
The Cardinal Middle School Comets team would shoot a score of 3,226 to take first place over Washington Middle School's team score of 2,968. Eddyville-Blakesburg Fremont, the host school for the tournament, finished third in the middle school competition with a score of 2,787.
In the High School division, four teams would compete for team honors. Cardinal High School Comets finished first with a team score of 2,962, beating out EBF's second-place score of 2,806.
Washington High School took third with 2,506 score. The fourth spot went to North Mahaska High School with 2,418 score.
In the Boys High School individual shoot, Justin Conger of Cardinal would take first place with a score of 280. Comet teammate Brennon Elder came in second with a score of 279.
In the Girls High School individuals shoot, Cardinal would take nine out of the top-10 spots. North Mahaska's Makenzie LaRue, however, would beat out the nine top-10 Comet archers with a winning score of 280.
Madison Durflinger led the Cardinal High School girls team, finishing second overall in the individual shoot with a score of 277. In the Middle School division, Cardinal’s Savannah Collett shot 272 score for the first-place prize in the girls division, helped lead the middle school team to the victory.
The next shoot for Cardinal Archery Shooting Comets will be in 2014, The Cardinal archery team will compete in Mount Vernon on Saturday, Jan. 4.
