Warriors pull away from Cardinal in second half for SEISC South win

KEOSAUQUA — Van Buren pulled away midway through the second half on Saturday to earn a 57-46 Southeast Iowa Superconference south make-up contest with Cardinal.

The game was tied at 24 at the half. Van Buren used a 5-0 run to close out the third quarter to lead retake the lead, 36-32.

“We changed players that we were posting up to take advantage of a mismatch,” said Van Buren coach Matt Zeitler.

Van Buren built the lead to 10 at the four-minute mark. Cardinal could get no closer than five in the remaining minutes.

“We had some critical turnovers and didn't rebound well at either end of the floor,” said Cardinal coach Aaron Dose.

The Warriors used good free throw shooting to close out the win.

“Normally we shoot around 50 percent from the line,” said Zeitler. “We were something like 13 of 18 from the line (Saturday) late in the game.”

Van Buren (4-3, 4-3) heads to New London while Cardinal (4-5, 3-4) heads to Central Lee for a pair of SEISC south contests tonight.
