The winter storm that rumbled through the middle of the country left a big goose egg on the area prep athletic schedule Thursday.
The storm dumped a foot of snow in some areas of Iowa and Wisconsin, offered up whiteout conditions, stranded holiday travelers and sent drivers sliding over slick roads. Though this section of Iowa didn’t see near as much snowfall as the rest of the state, all Ottumwa and Courier-area sports events — and most events throughout the state of Iowa — were canceled Thursday.
The Ottumwa Bulldog bowling teams were scheduled to face Mount Pleasant at Champion Bowl in Ottumwa Thursday, the swim team had a dual against at Des Moines East and the wrestlers had a dual against Indianola at Evans Middle School — the wrestlers’ first home meet of the season. All those events were postponed Thursday, and make-up dates had not yet been decided.
Bowling coach Doug Techel said the Mount Pleasant duals probably wouldn’t be rescheduled until the new year, while wrestling Coach Kevin Cochran said his team’s home dual with Indianola wouldn’t occur until after Christmas Break.
As of Thursday, tonight’s Ottumwa basketball games at Des Moines North were still scheduled. Ottumwa girls basketball coach Kevin Patterson said that the boys and girls basketball games slated to be played tonight at North were still on tap, but that could depend upon what happened overnight.
The winter storm hit Des Moines with a lot more snow than what fell in the Ottumwa area, and windy, blustery conditions were expected to continue through the night Thursday and into Friday. Ottumwa hoops fans hoping to make the trip to watch the Bulldogs would be best advised to call ahead to make certain the games are still scheduled and be aware of potential hazardous road conditions.
All Ottumwa varsity teams will be on holiday break after tonight. The Bulldog wrestling team is scheduled for a dual at Pella on Thursday, Jan. 3. The Ottumwa swim team is slated to host Des Moines Hoover and Des Moines North in a triangular that same day. The Bulldog boys and girls basketball teams are scheduled to play at Keokuk in a doubleheader on Friday, Jan. 4. The Ottumwa boys and girls bowling teams have the longest layoff, as the Bulldogs aren’t scheduled until a dual at Indianola on Thursday, Jan. 10.
