Bulldogs wrestlers split at Pella

Ottumwa Courier

PELLA — The Ottumwa High School wrestlers returned to the mat after Christmas break Thursday as they split a double dual at Pella.

The Bulldogs fell to Norwalk 46-30 in their first dual, but they bounced back to easily defeat Pella 58-17.

Wyatt Schlotter and Karsten VanVelsor helped lead Ottumwa to early success in both duals. Schlotter (132) and VanVelsor (145) each scored a pair of pins with two falls in the first three matches with Juan Aldaba’s 13-3 major decision over Jake Speltz opening a 16-0 lead for the Bulldogs on their way to their eventual triumph over the Dutch.

Pinfall victories by Schlotter and VanVelsor helped Ottumwa battle Norwalk to a 12-12 tie through the first four matches of the dual. Unfortunately, the Warriors responded by ticking off six consecutive victories, four of them by fall, to open a 31-point advantage. While Ottumwa and Norwalk wrestled to a virtual stalemate in the lower weight classes, the Bulldogs had trouble securing victories in the higher weight matches.

Alec Clark scored a pinfall victory over Norwalk’s Trevor Baack at 103, and Nathan Cary pinned Dominic Debban at 113. Among Ottumwa wrestlers that wrestled at a weight class higher than 145 pounds, only Kevin Childs was able to secure a win; he won by fall in the heavyweight division.

“There were a couple of matches where we were up big, and we ended up getting pinned,” assistant coach Jeremy Freuh said. “I felt that we could have fared a lot better against them if we would have won the matches I think we could of.”

Freuh went out of his way to praise Collin McConell’s efforts in his match. Although McConnell failed to get a win, the coach said he really battled in what was only the second varsity match of his career.

“He went out and competed for six minutes,” Freuh said. “He wrestled a really tough match, and we’re seeing some good things from him.”

Ottumwa (5-6) heads home for its first weekend tournament of 2013. The Bulldogs host their own invitational at Evans Middle School Gym at 9 a.m. Saturday.
