Bulldogs 12th, place four at CIML

RUNNELLS — The Ottumwa wrestling team took a 12th-place finish Friday night at the loaded CIML Conference Wrestling Invite. The Bulldogs finished with 61.5 team points and had four wrestlers earn places at the event, as Karsten Van Velsor placed second at 138, Nathan Cary placed fourth at 113, Kevin Childs took sixth at heavyweight and Connor Mier placed eighth at 195.

Southeast Polk won 17-team meet by a landslide, crowning six champions and scoring 295.5 team points to second-place Valley’s 159.5. Ankeny was a close third with 155 points while Dowling placed fourth at 153.5.

Van Velsor took two quick pins to get started at 138, putting Lincoln’s Matthew Wilson on his back in 1:12 and then pinning Mason City’s Will Siglin in 1:38. The Bulldog then pinned Ames’s Sam Peterson in the final seconds of the semifinal match to advance to the finals, where he faced Southeast Polk’s Dylan Buchheit. Buchheit took a hard-fought 4-3 decision over Van Velsor.

Cary took a 9-0 major decision over Indianola’s Nate Sams at 113, then took a decision 12-8 over Travis Price of Johnston. Valley’s Clayton Eicher pinned Cary in the semifinal match and then Dowling’s Jonah Eide took a tech fall over Cary in the third place match.

Childs, competing at 285, lost a heartbreaking round one, 1-0, decision to Tom Schiffer of Mason City in the opening round, but then won three straight consolation matches by fall to move into the fifth-place match. Childs pinned Abdulrahman Abusharkh of Valley (1:37), Andy Blackford of Dowling (3:26) and Kerrigan Kohnen of Ames (4:20) before falling in another heartbreaker to Colby Vlieger of Indianola in double overtime.

Wrestling at 195, Mier won a major decsion 11-2 over Marshalltown’s Justus Bjellend, but lost by fall in the quartefinals to Sawyer Kochel of Roosevelt. He took a tech fall 18-3 over North-Hoover’s Danny Nguyen to advance into the medal rounds, but lost a major decision to Mason City;s Will Slaven and lost a pinfall to Valley’s Cam Hansen in the seventh-place match.

The Bulldogs will take a week to prepare for the district meet, to be held at Mount Pleasant on Saturday, Feb. 9.
