E-B-F sends eight, Albia seven to districts

Ottumwa Courier

EDDYVILLE — It was Megan Black’s dream at the beginning of the year to be standing atop the podium at Wells Fargo Arena by the end of the state wrestling meet.

On Saturday, Black couldn’t bring herself to stand on the podium for the final time at the sectional meet.

A season that began with much promise for Black also featured many obstacles for the first female competitor to place at state. Through illness and injuries, Black battled her way back to compete Saturday in the Class 1A Sectional meet in Eddyville.

Despite having to move up a weight class to 113 pounds, Black made her way to the championship match and was one win from advancing to districts. Pins by Cardinal’s Ryan Cale and Southeast Warren’s Johnathan Hardy, however, brought Black’s chances of qualifying for a third straight state tournament to a sudden end.

Fortunately for Black, the rest of her Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont teammates were right there by her side. So were several other competitors and coaches Saturday to congratulate Black on a groundbreaking prep career.

“She’s going to bounce back. That’s Megan’s character,” Tucker Black said of her older sister. “She’s gone through so much this season, more then anyone will ever understand.

“She’s got such a huge future ahead of her. This is just a small part of the big things she has in front of her.”

It was a disappointing end to an overall successful day for the seventh-ranked EBF grapplers, who won the day of sectional competition on their home mats. The Rockets scored 251 points and sent eight of their 14 wrestlers to next week’s district meet in Pleasantville.

Several teams around the state would have loved to had the kind of day EBF had. The Rockets, however, had much higher expectations for themselves.

“Taking eight is nice, but truthfully we were looking to send all 14 wrestlers on,” Black said.

“That’s the mentality of our team,” EBF head wrestling coach Brett Little added. “You weigh 14 wrestlers in. You want all 14 wrestlers to win.”

All five of the Rockets’ ranked wrestlers advanced to districts, joining 160-pound sophomore Bret and 220-pound junior Chance Wursta as sectional champions. Fifth-ranked sophomore Jeren Glosser (120), third-ranked sophomore Blake Marolf (132) joined rated juniors Dillon Pigsley (182), Black (145) and fifth-ranked 138-pound senior Jason Crosby claiming titles Saturday.

“It’s a little bit different this year. This is my last time getting a chance to get it done at state,” Crosby said after winning his team-best 42nd match with an 8-1 sectional final decision over Southeast Warren’s Joshua Parker. “I’m going to be bringing my best and hopefully so will everyone on the team.”

Tucker Black, meanwhile, scored an impressive 7-4 win over Sigourney-Keota’s fourth-ranked senior Josh Yoder in the 138-pound final. The victory makes Black, rated ninth, 40-4 heading to districts.

“I believed in myself the whole time,” Black said. “I had some struggles staying healthy last year. I’ve been working hard to stay healthy this year and get better. It’s all been worth it.”

Sigourney-Keota sent five wrestlers to next week’s district meet. Both Josh and 152-pound senior Wes Yoder will join 132-pound junior Jeremiah Green, 170-pound sophomore Cole Streigle and junior heavyweight Tucker Fowler in Pleasantville as the Savage Cobras qualified for the regional duals with a second-place team showing.

Cale was the first of three Cardinal wrestlers to qualify. The 33-8 junior talked about the 113-pound final with Megan Black, which ended with Black reaggravating a knee injury.

“I was told that (Megan) was limping on it, but I didn’t think much of it going into the match,” Cale said. “It’s wrestling. Things happen. It all comes down to the more aggressive and who’s willing to take the shots that can set you up to win.”

Moravia will send two sectional champs to Pleasantville in 106-pound freshman Briar Cochran and senior heavyweight Dylan Conley. Van Buren juniors Tyler Runyon (106) and Jacob Heisel (126) also advanced while Pekin will send 152-pound senior Austyn Vogel and junior Trenton Conger, who rallied for a 4-1 wrestleback win over EBF’s Hunter Johnston at 195 pounds.

No area team had a better day anywhere then Tri-County/Montezuma, who won the team regional title at BGM with 204.5 points. The Trojans qualified wrestlers in eight of the first nine weight classes and finished with nine district qualifiers.

“This is the most that we have ever moved on and our first time winning a tournament as the TCM program,” Trojan head coach Scott Edmundson said. “The kids have worked hard to get to where they are at.”

Top-ranked 160-pound junior Tyler Foubert was one of the Trojan nine to qualify on Saturday. Foubert did suffer his second loss of the season, falling in the sectional finals to Lynnville-Sully’s Caden Doll 13-7.

While EBF had a big day on their home mats in Class 1A sectional action, Albia had big day of their own in their gym just 15 miles down the road. The seventh-ranked team in 2A sent seven wrestlers to next week’s district meet in Knoxville.

“We had a tremendous semifinals round as eight out of our 11 guys advanced to the finals,” Albia head coach Dave Wenger said. “It was probably one of the best rounds that I have ever experienced as a coach.”

Like the Rockets, all five Blue Demons’ ranked wrestlers qualified as sectional champs. Brothers Shadow (ranked fourth at 120), Bryce (ranked fifth at 126) and Brett (ranked second at 160) advanced as did 46-0 fifth-ranked 152-pound junior Griffin Osing, 138-pound junior Caleb White, seventh-ranked 145-pound junior Dalton Folkerts and senior heavyweight Zach Davis.

“There is no way that I can be disappointed in our effort,” Wenger said. “Our guys came out and competed with all of their hearts. That’s all that any coach can ask for.”

Centerville sent five wrestlers from Albia’s sectional. Fourth-ranked senior Riley Denny won the 195-pound sectional title while sophomore Bradley Irwin added a 138-pound crown for the Big Reds.

Chariton will send four wrestlers to Knoxville next Saturday, highlighted by sectional titlist in 10th-ranked 182-pound freshman Carter Isley. Davis County swept the first two sectional titles of the day as freshman Walker Henderson (106) and junior Kody Smith (113) clinched their district tickets early on Saturday afternoon.

Fairfield will send their four returning state qualifiers to next week’s district meet in West Liberty, including seventh-ranked 170-pound senior Seth Davisson. Seniors Ammon Shaner (138), Aaron Gevock (145) and Jacob Mineart (220) were also joined by 182-pound junior Brett Scott as sectional qualifying Trojans.
