AMES — The Ottumwa girls basketball team’s offense went ice cold in the second half in the Bulldogs 56-13 non-conference loss to Ames on Tuesday.

Ottumwa was shut out 23-0 in the second half. The Bulldogs suffered from poor shooting and a deficit of shots taken. Ottumwa struggled to take care of the ball in the half — the Bulldogs had 24 turnovers overall — which led to several wasted possessions where the Bulldogs were unable to get a shot off.

“When you shoot that low of a percentage, it’s tough to face a team that has a chance of qualifying for the state tournament,” coach Kevin Patterson said.

Remarkably, the Little Cyclones didn’t score a two-point bucket the entire first half, but they made up for it by making a surplus of 3-pointers. Ames built a 33-13 lead in the first half by drilling nine 3-pointers and knocking down six free throws.

“Nine 3s is a lot for any team,” Patterson said.

Sydney Strunk led Ottumwa with four points and Megan Black, Olivia Roark and Alexis Winn all scored three. Shaya Kellogg scored a team-high 14 points and buried four 3-pointers for Ames.

Ottumwa (4-16, 3-8) play host to CIML Metro Conference opponent Des Moines Roosevelt Friday on Senior Night.
