---- — AMES — It isn't the lead he held last year at the state golf tournament after the first day, but Centerville sophomore Alex Moorman is within striking distance of the medalist spot coming in to the final day at the Class 3-A boys state golf tournament at the Ames Golf and Country Club.

Moorman carded 79 strokes, three stokes behind tournament co-leaders Dane Waldren of Clear Lake and Trevor Green of Central Decatur, who both turned in scores of 76 after 18 holes on Friday.

A day with strong winds throughout the 18 hole, par 71 course gave golfers a struggle. Scores ranged from 76 to 103 strokes for the first 18 holes of the tournament.

Centerville is tied for sixth as a team with Central Clinton, DeWitt, both shooting 336 on the day. Clear Lake holds the lead after day 1, with a score of 320. Creston is second, three stokes back.

Weather is the main concern for golfers Saturday. Officials from the IAHSAA will meet with coaches in the morning to decide if they will follow a staggered tee time schedule or if Saturday will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

The National Weather Service is forecasting rain and cold temperatures for the state's best linksters on Saturday. The NWS forecasts an 81 percent chance of precipitation for the tournament's early 8 a.m. tee times. Winds are forecasted to be 14 mph with gusts of 18 mph out of the southeast. Temperatures are forecasted to be 54 degrees at 8 a.m.
