---- — AMES — Class 3A's best golfers received a difficult challenge at the Ames Golf and Country Club Friday and Saturday at the state golf tournament.
Linksters battled rough conditions on both days. Playing conditions went from strong winds on a dry course on day one to a flooded course on day two.
Centerville sophomore Alex Moorman, a year removed from winning the Class 3A boys individual title, was tied for sixth at the end of day one, turning in a score of 79 on the par 71 course. Moorman would rebound despite flooded fairways and hazards for a score of 77. The course changed to a par 70 on Saturday, as hole 8 was changed from a par 4 to a par 3 due to weather damage sustained to a larger part of the fairway on the hole, prompting the tee position to be moved forward
Creston/Orient-Macksburg's Carson Whittington won the tournament by one stroke, carding 155 over 36 holes. Whittington, a junior, came from a two-way tie for eighth place on Friday to gold Saturday. Moorman was right behind, finishing in a three-way tie for second with Clear Lake's Dan Waldron and Decorah's Michael Peter, carding 156.
Centerville's Logan Dabney turned in a two-round total of 162, good for a 12th place tie. Quentin Fowler tied for 29th with a score of 169 while Blake Dabney was tied for 34th at the end of the tournament with a score of 171. Jacob Hargrave was 42nd with a total of 179 strokes while Tanner Cowan was 48th with a score of 190.
Centerville finished fourth as a team. The Big Reds were in a two-way tie for sixth at the end of day one, but they used a 14 stroke improvement from Friday to Saturday to move up to fourth. Centerville ended the tournament with 658 total strokes.
Creston/Orient-Macksburg was the Class 3A team champion with a total of 647 strokes. Decorah was three strokes behind in second and Clear Lake was third, down six strokes to Creston.
