McConnell shines at first outdoor meet

MOUNT PLEASANT — Cody McConnell sparkled in the Ottumwa track and field teams’ first outdoor meet Thursday at the Mount Pleasant Invitational.

McConnell, a prolific cross country runner whose track and field season was cut short by a calf injury last spring, took first in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:29.02.

“He led the race the whole way, so it was a good start for him this year,” Ottumwa coach Jim Nickerson said.

In addition, McConnell snared second in the mile with 4:51.06. Plus, the junior runner  impressed his coach with his incredible performance in the 4x400 relay. McConnell, along with Jalen Strunk, Nathan Cary and Dakota Deiters finished sixth with 3:56.17. McConnell sparked his team by running the lead-off time in 55 seconds.

Meanwhile, Ottumwa’s 4x400 relay team of Sydney Strunk, Charlette Flanders, Kristi Cary and Georgia Garrett took fourth with 4:25.30 and the 4x100 team of Ashlyn Thompson, Sarah Schulz, Sarah Thordarson and Erin Sheehy finished fourth with 53.14. Plus, Sheehy grabbed fourth in the 200 meter dash with 28.21.

“Erin Sheehy looked really good tonight,” Ottumwa girls track and field coach Steve Green said. “She just keeps improving steadily.”

The Bulldogs distance medley team finished sixth, completing the race in 4:54.20.  And, perhaps more importantly, Georgia Garrett ran the 800-meter leg of the race in a career best time of 2:48.

For the boys, Chris Peden took fifth in the discus with a heave of 116 feet and seven inches and the 4x100 team of Isaiah Cox, Isaiah Hutchison, Terrance Smith and Titus Weller came in sixth.

The boys will compete at the Iowa City Invitational Tuesday and girls will compete at Fairfield on the same day.
