BLOOMFIELD — Two meets into the season, Davis County girls head track coach Josh Husted hasn’t had to do much sweating.

No, it’s not because the weather has been colder. It’s because his Mustangs have easily won both of their first two outdoor meets.

After winning the Lady Dee Early Bird Invite by almost 100 points, Davis County only beat out Pekin by 83 on Tuesday to win the Dennis Anderson Relays. The Mustangs swept through the field events for the second straight meet, setting the tone for a big night of points as 180 points was plenty for a win in their home meet.

“That doesn’t happen often,” Husted said about the Mustangs’ Kate Birchmier, Hayleigh Sharp and Lauren Lynch’s sweep of Davis County in the field events. “Field events are important to back up points for the team and Hayleigh has become one of the best leapers in the state. Kate has increased her school-best discus throw by throwing the state’s best toss in this meet (128-1.5).”

“When your field events are doing well, it sets the tone for the meet. For the past several years, the early races have been good events for us and now we have great field events to go with it.”

Davis County also got first-place finishes on the track from their 4x200 (2:00.249), 4x800 (10:32.07) and distance medley (4:49.041) relay teams. The Mustangs finished off their victory as a team over Pekin by winning a back-and-forth battle in the 4x400 finale with the Panthers in a time of 4:31.72.

“We blessed with many 400 meter runners,” Husted said. “They are competing strong and our 4x400 really did a great job going back and forth with Pekin to earn that win.”

The Pekin girls’ lone individual win came from Taylor Lock, who outlasted Davis County's Chandra Smith in the 3000 meters  to win in a time of 11:54.81. The Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont girls finished fourth with 86 points and got wins from Karlie Taylor in the 100 meter hurdles (10.929), Tasha Alexander in the 400 hurdles (1:12.759) and the shuttle hurdle relay team (1:15.304). Albia’s Kim Teno won the 800 meter run in 2:32.942 as the Lady Dees scored 43 points to finish fifth. Twin Cedars finishes sixth with 33 points, highlighted by Alya Crosby’s winning run of 29.153 seconds in the 200 meter dash, while Moravia scored 29 points to finish seventh with Katelynn Tracy’s second-place long jump of 14-9 leading the Lady Mohawks.

While the Mustang girls turned their portion of their home relays into a runaway, the Davis County boys saw a battle to the end with Fairfield left undecided by the end of the meet. The Trojan and Mustang boys finished the night with 150 points apiece, leaving the teams to share the team title after Fairfield scored the win in the 4x400 relay in 3:46.842 over the second-place Mustangs (3:51.256).

The Mustang boys, like the girls, also scored highly in the field with the discus combo of Conner Davidson (141-2.5) and Zeb Black (126-6) joining shot putters Wyatt Garmon (49-1) and Wayne Doerscher (47-1) in scoring one-two finishes for Davis County. Fairfield countered by having the fastest two boys on the track as Jonathon Hoehne (11.93) and Justin Hammes (15.63) finished one-two in the 100 meter dash.

The EBF boys scored 50 points to finish fifth with Drake Menius scoring the best finish for the Rockets by taking second in the 200 meter dash (24.038). Twin Cedars took seventh as a team with 21 points and got fourth place finishes in several events.
