AREA GIRLS BASKETBALL ACTION: Potter shines in Eagles victory

OTTUMWA — Moulton-Udell’s Natalie Potter scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed 16 boards in the Eagles’ 40-37 victory over Seymour Tuesday.

Rachel DeCook added 14 points to Moulton-Udell’s offensive output and Potter and Hailey Burgher paced the Eagles with three assists each.

Moulton-Udell jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter and was able to build a big enough lead to hang on for victory despite being outscored 18-9 in the final quarter.

“We started off very strong and it was enough to hold on to a nice road win,” Eagles coach Jason Ogden said. “I think we are still finding our game legs. We did a better job on the boards tonight.”

The Eagles (1-1) play at Novinger, Mo. Tuesday.

Pekin girls fall to Lone Tree, 58-56

LONE TREE — The Pekin girls basketball team came up a little short Tuesday, losing a nail-biter to Lone Tree, 58-56.

“It was the same old story,” coach Davis Eidahl said. “We started slow, we got behind  big, but in the second half we chipped away and took the lead with one minute to go. We had a chance with three seconds to go, but the shot was missed.”  

Panther McKenna Gambell had a tremendous game, leading Pekin with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting and grabbing a team high 11 rebounds. Pekin’s Cheyann Lankford added 14 points and led the Panthers with four steals. Leslie Stone added eight points.

Lone Tree’s Madelyn Flemr led all scorers with 17 points.

“We did have several positives come from the game,” Eidahl said. “Our girls never gave up.”

Pekin (1-2) plays Wapello Thursday.

Cardinal girls fall to Central Lee

DONNELLSON — Central Lee outscored the Cardinal girls basketball team 17-0 in the third quarter on the way to a 64-37 victory in action on Tuesday.

Lindsey Moore and Lexi Fullencamp scored 10 points each for the Comets, while Delaney Ridgeway added nine points and hauled in seven rebounds.

The Comets (1-2) travel to Notre Dame on Friday.
