Former Bulldog up for scholar-athlete award

OTTUMWA — A former star athlete at Ottumwa High School is one of five females up for a 2011-2012 Duane Schroeder IIAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.

Sarah Paulson, who recently finished her sports career at Central College in Pella where she played golf and basketball,  displayed her fierce dedication to academics and athletics long before she got entered college. Indeed, Her comittment to excelling in both worlds was on full display during her stint at Ottumwa High School.

Paulson, along with her identical twin Kristin, led the Ottumwa golf team to a state championship in 2007 and a state runner-up in 2008. Sarah took third at state her senior year, two spots behind the state champion, which happened to be her sister Kristin, who went on to golf at Iowa State University.

Sarah capped off her Ottumwa basketball career with a stellar senior season as she led the Bulldogs with 16 points a game. Paulson’s accomplishments in the classroom and in the sports world led the Ottumwa A-Club to name her and Kristin co-Outstanding Female Athletes of the Year in 2008. Both girls, because of their perfect grade point averages, also shared the role of valedictorian at graduation.

Sarah maintained her high level of performance in academics and athletics at Central. In golf, she was named three-time Iowa Conference MVP: Paulson has the all-time best scores on 18-, 36- and 72 holes at the Iowa Conference Championship. Plus she was a two-time top-10 finisher at the NCAA Division III Women’s Championship — she tied for runner-up honors last spring. On the basketball court, she earned second team all-conference honors and averaged over 10 points a game in 71 games. Her academic accomplishments include being a three-year member of the Iowa Conference All-Academic team.

According to a press release, the Female and Male Scholar-Athletes of the year will be selected by the Iowa Intercollegiate Faculty Athletic Representatives. This year’s winners will be released Jan. 3.
