OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa girls bowling team gained a measure of revenge against a CIML Metro conference rival while the boys dropped their first dual of the season in both teams’ home opener Thursday against Des Moines Lincoln at Champion Bowl.

The girls thrashed the Railsplitters, the source of Ottumwa’s only dual loss last season, 2997-2480.

“We really wanted to beat them, Payton Wilbanks said. “They are our biggest competition.”

Michaela Malloy led the way for the Bulldogs, as she averaged 229 in her two rounds of bowling. Lynissa Lasley bowled an average of 211 and freshman standout Bailey Palmer finished with an average of 198.5. In addition, Sydney Swallow bowled an average of 188, Sadie Shaw 182 and Wilbanks 166.

“Probably from one to 10, this is the most talented team we’ve ever had,” Bowling coach Doug Techel said.

“We try to help each other,” Wilbanks added.

The boys, despite posting the best score of their young season, fell to the Railsplitters’ formidable team, 3229-3113.

“Yeah, we bowled our highest score of the year and we just got beat today,” coach Brett Salter said. “They bowled well and we would be the first one to shake their hands. I don’t know if we could have bowled a lot better for us right now.”

Austin Palmer led Ottumwa with an average of 219.5. He was followed by Isaac Goodman, who bowled a 216, Anthony Roberts (215) Joey Lee (207) Brandon Six (198.5) and Braxton Coble (180.5).

“We did come up a little short against Des Moines Lincoln, but they do have a very superb team,” Roberts said. “We definitely made progress, everyone bowled well today, we all contributed.”

Roberts noted that his team did a much better job of picking up its spares than it had in previous outings.

The boys team’s best bowler on this day, however, wasn’t bowling for the varsity team; he was bowling for the junior varsity. First-year bowler Seth Meinders bowled rounds of 246 and 268 for an average of 257. His stellar day helped the junior varsity boys win 3014-1055. The junior varsity girls also triumphed over the Railsplitters 2502-1807.

The Ottumwa bowling teams next Thursday against Mount Pleasant at Champion Bowl.
