Local spring sports action postponed

OTTUMWA — The day of April was also supposed to be the first full day of the spring sports season around southern Iowa. Temperatures that were anything but spring-like, however, changed those plans.

A dip in the temperatures caused area high school spring sporting events to be postponed, including the season opener for the Ottumwa girls soccer team. The Bulldogs also announced on Monday that the boys track team’s scheduled competition at the Iowa City West Invitational today has also been canceled in anticipation of more chilly weather.

The Ottumwa boys are next scheduled to compete on Thursday at the Keokuk Relays. As of Monday, the Ottumwa girls track team is still scheduled to join Oskaloosa in competing tonight at the Fairfield Relays.

The Bulldog girls scheduled opening soccer match at Oskaloosa will now be played on Friday evening. Ottumwa will now open the girls soccer season at home on Thursday night against Mount Pleasant.

The Indian Hills softball team also saw their scheduled Region XI-opening doubleheader at home with Muscatine postponed, marking the third different time this year IHCC has had a regional opener pushed back by the weather. The Warriors also had their road doubleheader at Muscatine postponed last Thursday.

Tuesday’s softball doubleheader against DMACC is scheduled for 3 p.m., weather permitting. Make-up dates have yet to be announced for either doubleheader with the Cardinals.

The Ottumwa boys are scheduled to participate in the Keokuk Relays Thursday.

The weather also pushed the Class A portion of Davis County’s Dennis Anderson Relays back to Friday night. Cardinal, Seymour, Moravia, Pekin and Sigourney are scheduled to have teams competing either in boys or girls competition.

The Class AA portion of the Anderson Relays are scheduled for tonight. Albia, Eddyville-Blakesburg, Twin Cedars and the host Mustangs will be among the teams scheduled to compete tonight in Bloomfield, also weather permitting.
