Twice this past weekend, the Indian Hills baseball team had chances to their record to a winning mark for the first time this season. Twice, the Falcons let that opportunity slip away by losing leads against Muscatine.
Against Ellsworth, IHCC decided to try out the come-from-behind route themselves. It made the third time the charm for Cam Walker squad to move over .500 for the first time in 2013.
After spotting the Panthers a 3-0 lead in the second inning on Wednesday at Pat Daugherty Field, IHCC used a four-run fourth inning to start a comeback that didn’t end until a five-run eighth put away an 11-5 victory. The win gave the Falcons their 10th win of the season and moves Indian Hills to 10-9 on the season after a five-game losing streak in Arizona left IHCC at 1-6 to start the season.
Errors hurt the Falcons early as a pair of miscues opened the door to the Panthers’ three-run second inning. An opening error by Ellsworth in the fourth inning would come back to help IHCC as the extra out allowed Jordan Berry to connect on a two-out go-ahead double to score Junior Santos.
J.J. Reimer tied the game immediately for Ellsworth, scoring Hugo Allende with an RBI double in the top of the fifth before IHCC regained the lead in the bottom half as another Panther error allowed another unearned Falcon run to score. Ronald Barrios tied the score again for Ellsworth in the top of the sixth with an RBI single before a clutch two-out single by Tyler Hermann drove in Joel Booker in the seventh with the run that would give Indian Hills the lead for good.
After finally keeping Ellsworth from answering right back in the top of the eighth, IHCC finally put away the victory with four big hits. Berry had back-to-back RBI doubles while Hermann and Caleb Ratzman each had RBI singles in the five-run inning that put the Falcons up by six.
Indian Hills will be looking to improve to a season-best two games over .500 today as the Falcons host Southwestern today at Daugherty Field just two days after beating the Spartans in Creston 13-0 in seven innings. IHCC then hosts their second regional weekend series of the season as Indian Hills welcomes in Marshalltown for a pair of doubleheaders starting Saturday at 3 and Sunday at 1 p.m.
