Ottumwa long jumper performs well in Ames

AMES — Ottumwa track and field coach Jim Nickerson has high hopes for long jumper Osha Wylie.

"He's got two nice ingredients," the veteran coach said, "super foot speed and a tremendous vertical jump. You put those two together and that's what the long jump is all about."

And, Wylie continues to perform in a manner that reaffirms Nickerson's belief that he's yet to scrape his stratospheric ceiling.

At the Iowa Indoor Classic Tuesday, Wylie recorded the top finish of any Bulldog, taking 16th in the long jump with 19-1.

"This young man has the ability of setting the all-time school record [in the long jump] before he graduates," Nickerson said.

Another group Nickerson thinks has a tremendous upside is the six runners vying for a spot on the 4x400 team.

In Ames, Trevor Anfinson, Jalen Strunk, Matt Moreland and Wylie took 32nd in the 4x400 with 3:54.14. Andrew Altfillisch and Roger Cruz, however, also are competing for a spot on the team.

"We've had a lot of success in the 4x400 at Ottumwa and if they stay healthy this group could compete at state level someday," Nickerson said. "This is a learning year this year. When their bodies mature, that's the time when they will have a chance to go for the state title."

In other events, Dalton Bowers corralled 32nd in the 3,200 with 11:08.72 and Hunter McCoy nabbed 34th in the high jump with a leap of 5-3.

Besides that, Wylie collared 34th in the 400 dash with 55.17 and Chris Peden took 40th in the shot put with a heave of 39-2. The 1,600 medley team of Altfillisch, Cruz, Cox and Jason Tahtinen corralled 41st with 4:07.13 and Tahtinen, Dallas Keasling, Alec Hensley and Brandon Bullock nabbed 45th with 9:27.83.

The Ottumwa track and field teams compete at 4:30 p.m. today at Central College.
