---- — OTTUMWA — The Indian Hills softball team will try to bounce back from a pair of dispiriting losses to softball powerhouse and three-time defending Region XI champions Iowa Western last Wednesday when the Warriors put on the Reed Overhead Doors Softball Classic this weekend at R.L. Hellyer Softball Field.
“We have to be better defensively,” Indian Hills softball coach Jim Overturf said, “and we have to be consistent with it. We haven’t been focused on the defensive side. Our goal is always to have one error or less per game and there are some games when we have four or five errors. We have to get over the fear of making a mistake and be more aggressive and confident and make more plays.”
While Overturf wants to see progress on the defensive front, he has liked what he’s seen from his team offensively.
“We want to continue to do what we’ve been doing,” Overturf said. “Our offense has been producing enough runs to win ballgames.”
Still, there’s always room for improvement.
“We need to be ready to be aggressive on the right counts,” the coach said.
To Overturf, the right count means means anytime a hitter is ahead in the count (1-0, 2-0, 3-1, 3-2, etc.).
“On those pitches you should be mentally focused to attack more more aggressively,” he said. “Sometimes our hitters don’t stay on the aggressive side.”
Interestingly, the coach said the first pitch also can present an opportune time to be more aggressive at the plate.
“The first pitch can be a pretty good pitch to attack,” Overturf said.
He said he will look for some of his sophomore players — Kaylyn Decock, Laci Moore and Kendle Schieber — for leadership in the Classic.
Indian Hills kicks off the Classic today at 10 a.m. against Southeast Community College from Nebraska. Later in the evening at 6 p.m., the Warriors will face Crowder Community College from Missouri. On Sunday, the IHCC starts the day at 9 a.m. against Central Community College from Nebraska and the Warriors will wrap up the Classic at 5 p.m. against Jefferson Community.
