ROCKFORD, Ill. — After going almost two weeks without a victory, the Indian Hills volleyball team bounced back in a big way on the opening day of the Kishwaukee Invitational on Thursday. The Warriors snapped a two-match losing streak by winning two matches, sweeping Carl Sandburg before edging South Suburban in a five-set thriller.

The Warriors scored their second win of the day in a tight fifth game, earning a 15-12 victory over the Bulldogs to close out the day.

“It’s hard when your dealing with sickness and injuries, but that’s what it’s all about,” IHCC head volleyball coach Lyndsey Lyon said. “It’s much better to win in five then lose in five. The girls really dug down to pull out that win.”

In the first match of the day, IHCC picked up a relatively stress-free 25-18, 25-14, 25-18 win over Carl Sandburg. Peyton Crosser and Carla Novaes each led the Warriors at the net, going 16-20 with right kills while Crosser added five blocks.

Ailime deFreitas added a perfect 16-16 serving effort in the Warriors’ first match with 39 assists. Jessi Black also led IHCC with 12 digs.

“We played really well offensively and defensively against Carl Sandburg,” Lyon said. “We’re still adjusting to different lineups, but our girls stuck it out throughout the day.”

Indian Hills (23-7) returns to the court in the Kishwaukee Invite this morning. The Warriors will take on Harper at 10 a.m. before facing the host Kougars at 4 p.m. this afternoon.
