COLUMBUS JUNCTION — Colton Dorpinghaus’ second place finish propelled the Albia boys cross country team to a second place finish in the boys Class 2A Regional tournament Monday at Columbus Junction.

“Our top four runners did all they could and we were fortunate to have a number five runner that was able to hang on and get us in the top three teams,” Albia coach Todd Ratliff said.

On the girls side, Chandra Smith’s fourth place finish of 16:56 helped secure second place for Davis County.

“This is the best she has ever done at districts,” coach Josh Husted said.

This marks the second consecutive season the Mustangs have advanced to the state tournament.

“We were obviously shooting for first place,” Husted said, “I was pretty pleased with their performances and hopefully after a week of practice we will make improvements and place well at state.”

J.D. Anderson came in 17th for Albia with 17:48 and Mason Cox claimed 19th with 17:51. Aaron Ambrose grabbed 21st with 17:56, Tyler Pasut finished 41st 18:49, Marcos Ferryera took 55th with 19:20 and Tyler Beary directly followed him; he placed 56th with 19:50.

Ratliff said no Blue Demons runner has ever finished higher than 14th at state, so the boys team’s goal is to have someone set a new record.

Addie McKee took 11th for the Mustangs with 17:18, Ally McClure claimed 13th with 17:41 and Maggie Hougland finished 27th with 18:44. In addition, Kalliegh Tharp grabbed 33rd with  19:07, Marrisa Hamburg placed 35th with 19:18 and Sydney Spargur snagged 46th with 19:57.

For the Albia girls, freshman Michelle Manser was the sole qualifier; she finished 10th with 17:12. The team came in sixth with 146 points.

“She was pretty blessed to make that top 10,” Ratliff said.

The coach said senior runner Krystyn Garver has been a mentor to Manser this season. Ratliff said he hopes his freshman runner can relax and enjoy the experience of competing at state as much as she can.

Garver came in 25 with 18:35, Kim Teno claimed 31st with 19:03 and Kaitlyn Spieler snagged 32 with 19:06. Liz Kent grabbed 48th with 21:53 and Amber Mills took 63rd with 23:08.

Zach Hougland became the first runner for the Mustang boys to qualify for state in eight or nine years, Husted said.

“The young man who qualified was just a freshman and it’s very, very rare for a freshman to qualify for state,” Husted said.

Davis County’s Justin Vollmer narrowly missed qualifying for state, finishing 13th overall and five seconds off a qualifying time with 17:35. Clay Roberts finished third among the Mustangs and 29th overall with 18:11, Kody Smith came in 42nd with 18:52 and Sean Emmons took 52nd with 19:15. Also, Chris Harvey finished 53rd with 19:16 and Coty Good came in 68th with 20:03.

“I really look for our boys to make a big impression at state in the next couple of years,” Husted said.

The 2012 Iowa Cross County meet will take place Saturday at the Lake Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge. The girls 2A meet starts at 1 p.m. and boys 2A meet will directly follow it at 1:30 p.m.
