Bulldog spikers shocked by Burlington

BURLINGTON — The Ottumwa volleyball team’s season came to an abrupt end Thursday in a 3-2(20-25, 29-27, 25-23, 25-15, 17-15) loss to Burlington in the semifinals of Class 5A regionals.

Ottumwa senior middle hitter Katie Sammons spearheaded the Bulldog offense with 19 kills and five aces.

“It’s going to be hard to replace a Katie Sammons,” coach Jessica Carson said.

Ottumwa junior outside hitter Megan Black added 13 kills, senior setter Beth Overturf distributed 23 assists and senior libero Olivia Roark had 30 digs.

“Burlington played a very good game, but we came out and overlooked them a little bit,”  Carson said. “I don’t feel like we came out ready to play hard. ...We came out a little relaxed.”

The coach made sure to compliment her seniors — Sammons, Overturf, Kelsey Guyette, Roark, Ashlyn Nordyke — for the time and effort they have invested in the Bulldog volleyball program.

“The seniors were great contributors to the team,” Carson said. “They were the leaders of the team and they will be greatly missed next season.”

The Bulldogs ended their season at 16-20.
