---- — SIGOURNEY — The Sigourney volleyball team faced the first of what head coach Chris Carter called “two important conference tests” on Monday at home against Iowa Valley.

The Tigers, one of just two teams to beat the Savages last year in South Iowa Cedar League play, took advantage of a constant advantage at the net to earn a 25-13, 25-15, 25-20 sweep.

“We played them closer this year than we did last year. We came out and played with a lot of fire and served really well right from the start,” Sigourney head volleyball coach Chris Carter said. “The thing that makes Iowa Valley so good is they have so many hitters. We worked a lot on our defense, but the problem is we just had one spot up front that we couldn’t quite match up in our rotation. When that rotation came up, they would just take advantage and pull away. We played them about as tough as we could at this point.”

Jordan Carter led Sigourney with 14 kills on 29-36 hitting to go along with three blocks and an ace on a perfect 8-8 serving. Becca Ohland added 15 digs while Sydney Davis had 21 assists.

The second important early-season SICL match of the season for Sigourney (2-3, 2-1) comes up on Wednesday night. The Savages will host Belle Plaine, the other team along with Iowa Valley that was able to hand Sigourney a conference loss last year.
