Ottumwa girls swim to sixth, Fairfield seventh at Marshalltown Invite

---- — MARSHALLTOWN — The Ottumwa girls swimming team put themselves up against some very tough and talented teams on Saturday, scoring 72 points to finish sixth overall as team at the Marshalltown Invitational. The Bulldogs edged out Fairfield by five points for the position on a day that head coach Steph Mishler called “a good learning experience.”

“We had the opportunity to watch some really fast races, which is a big motivator as we move into the second half of the season,” the OHS head girls swimming coach said of Saturday meet held in the home Marshalltown YMCA pool that will host the Girls State Swimming Meet later this fall.

Johnston won the team title at Marshalltown on Saturday, beating out Lewis Central with 362 points. Lewis Central led all teams in the tournament by winning eight races in the invitational.

Ottumwa has one top-five relay finish on Saturday as the Bulldogs’ got a fifth-place swim from the 200 medley relay team of Marissa Rupalo, Caroline, Claire and Ellen Carlson in a time of 2:07.27. Rupalo also had the lone top-10 individual finish for OHS at Marshalltown with a seventh-place swim of 1:11.92 in the 100-meter butterfly.

Fairfield had several different top-five finishes in the Marshalltown Invite, including a third-place showing in the diving competition from Katherine Mueller who totaled 391.45 points. Bailey Bowman also finished third in the 100-meter backstroke in a time of 1:05.03 and fifth in the 100-meter freestyle in 59.05 seconds.

The Ottumwa girls swimming team returns to the pool today for a CIML Metro Conference dual at Des Moines Hoover at 5:30 p.m. Fairfield is back in action with the Bulldogs next weekend at the Burlington Invitational on Saturday at Noon.
