Top-ranked Regina shuts out Cardinal for 47th straight win

IOWA CITY — Quarterback Drew Cook threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, helping keep he and his father’s team on the path to making state history. Head coach Marv Cook’s squad picked up a 51-0 victory over Cardinal on Friday, running the state’s longest active winning streak to 47 straight games.

Cook scored on a nine-yard touchdown run to kick off the scoring less than two minutes into the game. Cook followed that up with a scoring toss to Payton Raso from 16 yards out to double the lead and had a six-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Amelon in the second quarter, putting Iowa City Regina (5-0, 3-0) up 28-0.

Cardinal gained just 63 yards of offense against the stout Regal defense and picked up only four first downs while the Regals gained over 400 yards and collected 21 first downs by the end of the night. Nathan Yeager led the Comets with 13 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.

Cardinal (1-4, 0-2) will return home to face the other unbeaten team in Class 1A, District 6 Friday. The Comets will take on fifth-ranked Wilton in Eldon at 7 p.m.
