Ottumwa cross country teams take third at league meet

DES MOINES — The Ottumwa High cross country teams both took third at the CIML Metro Conference meet Thursday.

The boys' team finished with a score of 96 and the girls recorded a 67. The Buldog girl harriers finished only three points behind second-place finisher Indianola, which finished with 64. The girls efforts were spearheaded by Daylin Latham, who took ninth with a time of 17:28.

While Latham was the only Bulldog to crack the top 10, a number of the Ottumwa girls finished in the top 16, which earned them all-conference honors. Charlette Flanders corralled 11th with 18:00, Georgia Garrett followed closely behind her in 12th with 18:05 and Ashlyn Thompson nabbed 13th with 18:10. In addition, Jaiden Cloyd finished 22nd with 18:46, Gracie Rivera garnered 24th with 18:50 and Sam McCoy came in 26th with 19:04.

"I was extremely impressed with the way the girls came out and competed tonight," Ottumwa girls' coach Angie Chaney said. "Tonight is a testament to how hard the girls have worked this season."

For the boys, Cody McConnell ran well enough to earn himself a spot in the top 10, which garnered him all-conference hours. McConnell corralled eighth 17:31. Dalton Bowers notched the Bulldog boys second fastest time with 18:57, which landed him in 20th place. In addition, Collin McConnell snared 21st with 19:06 and Curtis Ford nabbed 23rd with 19:18. Plus, Shane Riley finished 24th with 19:22, Roger Cruz garnered 32nd with 19:56 and Sebastian Silva took 34th with 20:23.

"It shook out about how I figured it probably would," Ottumwa boys' coach Jeff Smith said. "Our times were very comparable to what we ran here a week ago."

The Ottumwa will complete in the Class 4A District meet Thursday in Marion at the Tuna Soccer Complex. The meet will be put on by Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
