Carter slams 35 kills in Sigourney victory; Pekin survives in five games

(Continued)

Atwood led the Panthers with 16 kills while Jessica Horras complemented her efforts with 13 kills of her own. Cassidy Tolle also bolstered Pekin's offense with four aces and Whitney Horras notched a team-best 34 assists. Defensively, Jenna Swanson was the Panthers' bellwether leader with 12 digs and Atwood added 11. Jessica Horras and Atwood also gave the Panthers defense a boost with three blocks each.

"The girls fought hard and played with a lot of heart," Bartels said. "Now we have to bring the intensity to a higher level next Tuesday against West Branch. We can't make mental errors and give away easy points against a team like West Branch."

Pekin (11-10) plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at West Branch in the second round of the regional tourney.
