Bulldog girls net impressive second place showing at Kennedy Invite

CEDAR RAPIDS — Andrina Helgerson did her part to help the Ottumwa girls tennis team open its season with a win at the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Invitational over the weekend. Helgerson finished first both in the No. 6 singles competition, winning all three matches in 24 games, before teaming up with Caroline Carlson to sweep three matches in No. 3 doubles play.

Those eight points helped OHS finish second overall as a team. The Bulldogs collected 26 points, finishing just six points behind Waterloo West. Sweeps in singles play by Mikayla Schaefer, Adela Ikanovic and sisters Dina and Tina Kajtazovic helped lead West to the team title.

Leanna Nelson, who led the OHS girls tennis team for the first time as head coach on Saturday, talked about her team’s effort in Cedar Rapids.

“The girls did very well for the amounts of practices we have been able to have outdoors,” Nelson said. “I’m excited to see the progress of these girls will make throughout the season because I saw a lot of improvements throughout the day. I’m proud of girls and their accomplishments this weekend.”

The Ottumwa girls will compete next weekend at the Waterloo Columbus Invitational next Saturday.
