URBANDALE — It was more of a day for personal improvements on the track and on the field for the Ottumwa boys track team Thursday in Urbandale.
Competing against some of the best squads in the CIML at the J-Hawks’ Gary DouBrava Invitational, the Bulldogs had several top-10 finishes in events that featured as many as over 20 competitors. The meet was won by Waukee, which ran away the team title by almost 100 points over West Des Moines Valley with 170 points on the night.
Ottumwa’s highest finish in an event came in the 4x800 relay, where Cody McConnell, Roger Cruz, Dallas Keasling and Alec Hensley finished seventh in a time of 8:59.1. Cruz also finished 10th individually in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 56 seconds flat.
Hunter McCoy had the highest individual finish for OHS on Thursday, tying Ankeny’s Jordan Krueger for eighth place in the high jump with a leap of 5-6. Also coming in eighth place for Ottumwa was the distance medley relay team of Gabe Bowling, Shane Frazier, Andrew Altfillisch and Keasling in a time of 4:04.41.
Bowling, Altfillisch and Frazier also joined Sam Moreland on Ottumwa’s 4x200 meter team, which finished ninth place in a time of 1:41.65. McConnell, Cruz, Matt Moreland and Jalen Strunk guided the OHS 4x400 relay team to a ninth-place finish in a time of 3:46.86. Moreland and Strunk joined Kossi Bossou and Jacob Schultz in a 10th-place run for the Bulldogs’ shuttle hurdle relay team in 1:13.07.
