CENTERVILLE — After coming so close to getting its first win in nearly two years against Fairfield in their season opener, the Centerville girls soccer team didn’t let a second opportunity slide by against Mount Pleasant.
The Redettes bounced back from a 3-2 overtime loss to the Trojans by taking an overtime win on the road. Centerville beat Mount Pleasant, 1-0, to break a winless streak that lasted one year, 11 months and three days.
Cassidy Schacher scored the only goal of the game to give Centerville its first win since 2012. Redette goalie Katie Sharp had 18 saves for her first career shutout.
Centerville and Fairfield opened the season with a classic back-and-forth battle as the Redettes answered the Trojans first goal with back-to-back tallies to take a 2-1 lead. Schacher’s goal with 15:41 left in the first half would tie the game. Schacher had her first shot deflected back by the Fairfield goalie. Schacher would hit the goal with a rebound into the top corner of the net.
Four minutes later, Mikala White would score on a corner kick from Emily Caylor.
Fairfield would score with 24 minutes left in regulation to tie the game at 2-2. The Trojans would score four minutes into the sudden victory overtime period to end the game with the 3-2 win.
After that, Centerville will host Ottumwa at 5 p.m. on Monday.
