Panthers sweep Co-Ed Relays

CENTERVILLE — The Mount Pleasant Panthers boys’ and girls’ track program swept the team races at the Centerville Co-Ed Relays. The girls won with a team total of 215 while the boys took home a combined team score of 131, narrowly edging the Albia boys’ team who ended the night with 128 points.

Centerville placed fifth in each team race.

The Big Reds’ Graydon Schmidt and Kolton Gonnerman swept the top-two spots of the boys’ long jump. Schmidt’s best jump was 19-5 while Gonnerman’s was 19-2.

Centerville had two other runner-up finishes on the night from the boys’ squad.

Michael Firkins recorded a toss of 144-4 in the discus for second place. Schmidt recorded a time of 15.4 seconds to finish second in the 110 meter hurdles race.

Cassidy Schacher was the lone Redette to finish in the top-two on Thursday. She was second in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 12:21.1.

The Centerville boys track team will look to turn the tables on Mount Pleasant as the Big Reds join Cardinal, Fairfield, Pekin and Van Buren at the Panther Relays Thursday. The Redette girls will also compete Thursday, joining Chariton, Fairfield and North Mahaska at the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Relays.
