---- — ALBIA — Several talented area boys golfers teed off in the Albia Invitational on Tuesday. In the end, it was a pair of area teams with hopes of being in the 3A State Tournament that battled for the title as Fairfield beat out Centerville and former state champion Alex Moorman for the championship.

Nick Higgins finished as the individual runner-up behind Moorman with a round of 76, leading Fairfield to a 14-shot win over the Big Reds with a team total of 317. Five of the six Trojan golfers finished with rounds of 83 or lower while Centerville counted two scores in the 90s despite Moorman earning meet medalist honors with an even par round of 72.

“Fairfield is very, very good. They are an excellent team that can place high in Class 3A,” Albia head boys golf coach Marty Hermsen said. “Centerville’s a nice squad. I don’t think they played quite as well as they are capable of.”

The Blue Demons finished third in their home invite with a team round of 337. Drew Schofield finished third individually for Albia, leading the team with a round of 77.

“Our guys played well overall,” Hermsen said. “We still have some things to work on, but the goal coming into the day was to shoot below 340. We accomplished that.”

Davis County finished fourth as a team with a round of 360 and were paced by Logan Faler’s individual round of 80. Fairfield Maharishi finished sixth with a round of 418 highlighted by Mickey DeAngelis’ round of 81.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont finished seventh as a team with a 445, led by Austin Lorenzen’s round of 96. Moravia finished eighth with a team total of 576 and were led by a 110 round from Sam Clouse.

Albia will back on the course today in a quadrangular hosted by Moravia at The Preserve Course at Rathbun Lake. Centerville will also be in action today at Davis County while Fairfield will next compete at Fort Madison next Tuesday. EBF is back on the course in Bloomfield on Monday for a South Central Conference dual.
