Pekin Panthers lose tight duel to Central Lee

PEKIN – In a season featuring wild games that have lit up the scoreboard, the Pekin softball team found themselves in a much tamer affair on Wednesday. In a game with very little scoring, but more then a few scoring chances, the Panthers missed out several opportunities to pick up a victory over Central Lee as the Hawks held on for a 2-1 win in a battle of Southeast Iowa Superconference south and north foes.

The two teams combined for only one earned run on the night, given up by Cheyann Lankford over seven innings. Maranda Baker went 2-3 at the plate for the Panthers with a double as four Central Lee errors gave Pekin ample chances to score before 11 strikeouts ended those rallies.

“We played pretty good defense. We only had a couple of errors. They just put the ball in play more than us,” Pekin head coach Bryan Marley said. “We struck out 11 times. We didn’t put the ball in play enough. When you strike out that much, you aren’t going to win too many ballgames. We ended up leaving people in scoring position in four different innings.”

Pekin also lost a tough decision in SEISC north division play to Wapello, committing seven errors in a 9-4 loss at home on Thursday. The Panthers (8-6, 7-3) will then head to the Woodward-Granger Tournament to face three teams on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
