Albia splits with Centerville

ALBIA – A strong opening game pitching effort by Victor Sanders and a five-run rally in the third inning helped Albia knock Centerville out of its share of the South Central Conference lead Thursday night. The Blue Demons scored a 6-2 win in game one of an SCC doubleheader over the Big Reds, who bounced back to earn a 6-1 win thanks to a five-run fifth-inning rally.

Sanders struck out three, walked none and gave up five hits in game one. The lead stayed with Albia after the third, when it scored five runs on doubles by Brett Leshen and Griffin Osing, an error, and a wild pitch.

Michael Starcevich went 2-3 with an RBI in game one, then added two more hits including a double and two more RBI to lead Centerville’s comeback in game two. Down 1-0 entering the fifth inning, the Big Reds scored five times in the fifth inning to earn the split in Monroe County.

Centerville (12-6, 8-2), now a game behind EBF in the SCC standings after the Rockets sweep at Davis County Thursday, will be back on the diamond Monday for a doubleheader at Knoxville. After having their final two games of a busy week rained out with Fairfield on Friday, Albia (11-8, 4-6) will host Davis County in an SCC doubleheader on Monday.
